PORT ALLEGANY- Roy Smith, Sr., 90, of Catlin Ave., passed away Sunday (Mar. 14, 2021) in his home, with family by his side.
Born May 2, 1930, in Liberty Township, PA, he was a son of George J. and Lottie Mowery Smith. On Apr. 4, 1957, in Farmers Valley, he married Virginia L. Bells, who died May 16, 2006. On Oct. 13, 2012, in Port Allegany, he married Hilda E. Varney Schroll, who survives.
Roy was a longtime resident of the area and had worked for Pittsburgh Corning Co., in the Glass block department, before retiring in 1990, after 42 years of service.
Mr. Smith was a veteran, having served in the US Army, during the Korean War.
He attended the United Methodist Church of Port Allegany, and was a member of the VFW, Post 6391 of Port Allegany, American Legion, Frank Burt Post 258, and Loyal Order Moose, Lodge 460, Port Allegany. He was an avid outdoorsman and gardener.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Hilda, are two sons, Roy (Gail) Smith, Jr. and Michael A. Smith both of Port Allegany; three daughters, Darla (Tom) Bailey of Port Allegany, Ramona (Clark) Follett, of Olean, NY, Karen (Ted) Baker of Carthage, NY; a stepson, Kirk M. Schroll of Port Allegany, several grandchildren, several great-grand-children; a sister-in-law, Mary Smith of Richburg, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia, four brothers, Carson, William, Randall and John Smith; and six sisters, Viola Redington, Marie Bickford, Flossie Bosworth, Ora Barber, Lottie Boorum, and Billie Chandler.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday (Mar. 20, 2021), in the Veteran’s Memorial Home, Port Allegany. Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. in the memorial home, at which time a memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. with Rev. Matt Howe, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Port Allegany, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
A military service will be conducted by the Port Allegany Honor Guard immediately following the service.
Memorials can be made to the United Methodist Church or the Potter County Hospice, Coudersport.
