Merle L. SWORT, 88, of Whitesville, NY, died Sunday, May 8, 2016 at Hart Comfort House, Wellsville, NY, surrounded by his family.
He was born March 31, 1928, in North Bingham, PA, the son of Royal W. and Dorothy M. Jeffers Swort.
On November 22, 1950, he married the former Arlene G. Flynn, who survives.
In 1947, Merle graduated from Whitesville Central School. Merle was employed by Worthington/Dresser-Rand in Wellsville, NY for 40 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department, Whitesville Rod & Gun Club, Whitesville Snowmobile Club, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local No. 1580, and a life member of the NRA. An outdoorsman, his interests included hunting, fishing, golfing, waterskiing, and boating but no matter what, family always came first.
Surviving besides his wife of 65 years, Arlene, are: a sister, Pauline Swort Fairman; two children, Walter (Dawn) Swort and Georgia (Patrick) Birmingham; four grandchildren, Michael (Kimberly) Birmingham, Stephanie Swort Ordway, Michele (James) Lancaster, and Eric (Kassie) Swort; two great-grandsons; and four great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by two infant sisters, Lola Rae Swort and Irene Swort. Merle was blessed with a very special brother-in-law who was like a brother, Earl Fairman, who predeceased him.
Friends may call Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, Whitesville, NY from 2:00 - 4:00 PM, with a Memorial Service following at 4:00 PM. The Rev. Ruth Reppert will officiate. Burial will be in Whitesville Rural Cemetery.
