SMETHPORT- Mercedes M. Schwartz, 75, of Champlin Hill Rd., passed away Wednesday (Dec. 18, 2013) in her home, with her family by her side.
Born June 21, 1938, in Freeport, PA, she was a daughter of Edward G. and Julia A. Siciliano Altmeyer.  On Jun. 22, 1957, in Ecorse, MI, she married Bernard E. Schwartz, who died July 9, 2010. They were married 53 years.
Mercedes was a resident of the area for many years.  She was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier in Ecorse, MI, class of 1956.
She was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Port Allegany, where she was a former lector, and member of the Catholic Women group.  Mercedes was also a former lector and Sunday school teacher while a member at St. Francis Xavier in Ecorse, MI. She was a former Boy Scout Leader and had earned the Silver Beaver award.  She was an accomplished artist and art instructor at the Smethport Senior Center. She was a member of AARP, American Legion Auxiliary of Smethport, and the Elderberries Club-Smethport Senior Center, and also volunteered for many local organizations.
Surviving are two sons, George B. (Marilee) Schwartz of Lincoln Park, MI, Carl L. (Suzanne) Schwartz of Ecorse, MI; two daughters, Evelyn M. (Patrick) Mealy of Smethport, Virginia (Alene) L. Schwartz of North East, PA; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grand-children; a brother, David E. (Karen) Altmeyer of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard, a daughter, Diana M. Pearson, a brother, Edward R. Altmeyer, and a sister, Marlene A. Reyna.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial mass Friday (Dec. 20, 2013) at 11 a.m. in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Port Allegany, with Rev. James Campbell, as celebrant.  Burial will be in Flat Rock, MI.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
