Jean CARPENTER, 96, of Ulysses, died Thursday, August 29, 2013 in her home. Born December 7, 1916, in Elmira, NY, she was the daughter of Harry J. and Margaret E. Field McClelland. On April 12, 1946, in Ulysses, she married Lowell S. Carpenter, who predeceased her in 1984. A graduate of Mansfield State Teachers College and Cornell University, she did graduate work at Penn State. She was a mathematics, Latin, and French teacher in the Northern Potter School District for 26 years, retiring in 1976. Jean was a member of the Ulysses First Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, and served as a volunteer at Cole Memorial Hospital and Sweden Valley Manor. Surviving are: a son, William A. Carpenter of Ulysses; a daughter, Ruth (Gale) Sprague of Bath, NY; three grandchildren, Ryan Sprague, Farrell Sprague, and Tim (Laura) Sprague; three great-grandchildren, Ava, Gwen, and Gavin; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Arthur McClelland. There will be no public visitation. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM, Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses, PA. Rev. Jason K. Reed will officiate. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tri-Town Volunteer Ambulance or the Tri-Town Volunteer Fire Company, Ulysses, PA 16948.
