James A. Baker
SMETHPORT- James A. Baker, 99, formerly of W. King St. passed away Friday (Jan. 26, 2018) in Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center, Smethport.
Born January 7, 1919, in Bradford, PA, he was a son of Cecil J. And Gertrude M. Murry Baker. On June 15, 1946, in Smethport, he married Carolyn L. Hallstrom, who died Dec. 21, 2008. They were married 62 years.
Mr. Baker was a lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Smethport High School, class of 1938.
He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the US Army Air Corp.
James was employed in research & development and management with Airco-Speer Co., Bradford, for 20 years, Case Cutlery Co., Bradford for 7 years, and Intermediate IU9, Smethport, for 7 years before his retirement.
He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Port Allegany, where he was a past deacon, trustee, and usher. He was also a member of the Enchanted Mountain Weavers’ Guild and the McKean County Historical Society.
Surviving are two sons, Timothy J. (Julie) Baker of Wrights, Phillip H. (Esther) Baker of Edmonton Alberta, Canada; 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Carolyn, and a sister, Pauline R. Reese.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Jan, 31, 2018) in the Evangelical Covenant Church, Port Allegany, with Rev. J.T. Madison, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Farmers Valley.
