Wellsville, NY - Herbert "Gerry" Sherman, 81, of 191 Rauber Street died at home on Thursday, July 1, 2010.He was born August 17, 1928 in Wellsville the son of Herbert L. and Mary (Sweet) Sherman. On October 15, 1949 in Stannards he married Georgia M. Lewis who survives.
Gerry was a 1947 graduate of Wellsville High School; he received a business degree from Alfred State College in 1950 and graduated from Alfred University. He later graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting. He was first employed as a welder at Air Preheater Company in Wellsville from 1947 to 1961 and as an accountant from 1961 to 1967. He moved to Salamanca in 1967 and was employed as the accounting manager for Fantcher Furniture Store. In 1968 he came to Wellsville and opened and managed the accounting firm of Perciful & Bixby. In 1976 he opened his own accounting firm; H. G. Sherman Tax & Management Consultant. He sold his business and retired in 1998.
He was a member Wellsville Country Club, were he served as president from 1978 to 1981 and was a member of the board of Directors for 14 years. He was also a member and past president of the Wellsville Exchange Club and was a member of the Hallsport Christian Church. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed hunting, fishing at Rushford Lake and was a Civil War enthusiast.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 sons, Terry (Nancy) Sherman of Phoenix, AZ and Ronald (Kathy) Sherman of Wellsville, NY, two grandchildren, Jenna Sherman of Phoenix, AZ and Greg Sherman of Seminole, FL., as well as several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Daisy Harkenrider.
Friends are invited to call on Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be Tuesday July 6, 2010 at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Pastor Richard Bendelewski presiding. Burial will be in Stannards Cemetery.
