Harold L. Howard
PORT ALLEGANY- Harold L. Howard, 89, of Sartwell Creek Rd., passed away Friday (Feb. 17, 2017) in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.
Born May 5, 1927, in Ceres, NY, he was a son of Harold D. and Margaret Turner Howard. On Sept. 22, 1945, in Wellsville, NY, he married Edith M. Howden, who died July 15, 2016.
Harold was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of the Roulette High School, class of 1944.
He was a member of Sartwell Creek Union Church of Burtville, a 50 year member of F.& A.M. Liberty Lodge 505, Port Allegany, Coudersport Consistory, Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 460, Port Allegany, Potter County Historical Society, a former member of Coudersport Rotary Club, and a life member of the Roulette Fire Dept. He was a member of the Holstein Fresian Association of America, NRA, North American Hunting Club, National Wild Turkey Federation, and was an avid hunter and sportsman.
Mr. Howard owned and operated a farm on Sartwell Creek Road, where he was well known for his sweet corn. He was a member of the Potter County Extension Committee, and served as chairman and was a 4-H leader. He had served as a director and chairman of the Potter County Soil Conservation District, was a committeeman and chairman of the Farm Service Agency for 10 years. He was a former Agway committeeman, director of the Milk Marketing Cooperative and the Potter County Artificial Breeding Cooperative. Harold was a member of the former Burtville Grange and served as master. He was also a director of the Grange Insurance Company.
Harold was also active in Potter County politics, having served as Registration chairman, Finance chairman, and as a member of the Executive and Leadership Committee of the Potter County Republican Party. He was also elected and served as the Republican State Committeeman. He had served in several offices in the Courthouse: Potter County Treasurer, three terms as Prothonatary and Clerk of Courts, and as County Commissioner and chairman of the Board for four years, retiring in 1984.
Mr. Howard was a longtime Director of the Corporate Board of the Citizens Trust Co., and Citizens Bancorp. of Coudersport, Port Allegany, and Emporium. He was also an appraiser for the bank and former real estate agent for Trails End, Coudersport.
Surviving are three sons, Harold Ray (Janet) Howard of Roulette, Christian J. (Carol) Howard and Rodney W. (Judy) Howard both of Port Allegany; a daughter, Tamara E. Lorenzo of New Stanton, PA; 7 grandchildren, and a great-grandson; two brothers, LaVerne R. (Nadene) Howard of Port Allegany, and Ronald E. Howard of Rockville, MD; a sister, Carolyn J. Lyons of Olean, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Edith, and a son, Timothy E. Howard.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 21, 2017) with Rev. Allen Long, pastor of the Sartwell Creek Union Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sartwell Creek Cemetery, Burtville.
A masonic service will be conducted by Liberty Lodge 505, Port Allegany, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, in the funeral home.
