PORT ALLLEGANY- Gladys E. Carlson, 98, of Chalmers Ct., Berryville, VA, formerly of E. Vine St., Port Allegany, passed away Tuesday (May 16, 2017) in Rose Hill Health & Rehabilitation Center, Berryville, VA.
Born October 29, 1918, in Johnstown, PA, she was a daughter of Robert C. and Mary K. Ullery Leffler. On July 27, 1945, in Port Allegany, she married C. Elmer Carlson, who died May 22, 2001. They were married 55 years.
She was a longtime resident of the area and a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Port Allegany, where she was active in many church activities; Sunday school teacher and the Lutheran Women’s group.
Gladys volunteered at the Head Start Early Childhood Program, Port Allegany, for many years.
Surviving is a son, Robert J. (Beverly) Carlson of Round Hill, VA; two grandchildren, Dave (Pam) Carlson of Centerville, VA, and Melissa (Steve) Smyth of Purcellville, VA; four great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Morgan, Kaden, and Jacob Smyth; and several nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband C. Elmer, and a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Doris Leffler.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Friday (May 19, 2017) in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 8 p.m., with Rev. Joann Piatko, pastor of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
Memorials can be made to the Gethsemane Lutheran Church or S.W. Smith Library.
