Bolivar, NY - Gerald Martin Merritt, 73, of 6625 Phillips Hill Road died September 18, 2011 at his home in Bolivar. He was born September 21, 1937 in Ambrose, Georgia, the son of the late Marcillus and Ruby Lee (Taylor) Merritt. On May 12, 1963 in Gainesville, Florida he married Yvonne Andrews who predeceased him on July 16, 2008.
Gerald and Yvonne had formerly resided in Gainesville and Jacksonville, Florida and Wellsville, NY before moving to Bolivar. He operated a used car business most of his life. He was also employed at Worthington Corporation in Wellsville; retiring in 1999. He enjoyed racing stock cars, NASCAR, breakfast with his friends at Castaways and spending time with his dogs Nicky and Bandit.
He is survived by a sister, Nelda (Wayne) Gray of Gainesville, FL, a sister-in-law, Faye Merritt of Jacksonville, FL. a brother-in-law, Donald (Cheryl) Andrews of St. Petersburg, FL and Bolivar, NY and several nieces and nephews including, Andy Andrews of Bolivar.
Friends are invited to call on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation at 8:00 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Marian Schneider presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville.
