Frederick O. Hammond
PORT ALLEGANY- Frederick O. Hammond, 90, of E. Ransom St., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday (Jun. 22, 2021) in the Buffalo General Medical Center.
Born September 14, 1930, in Troupsburg, NY, he was a son of Ephraim F. and Margariet M. Burton Hammond. On Jun. 21, 1952, in Port Allegany, he married Dorothy I. Trimm, who died Mar. 27, 2021. They were married 68 years.
Fred was a longtime resident of the area and a graduate of Coudersport High School, class of 1948.
He was employed with Pittsburgh Corning Co., formerly of Port Allegany, retiring in 1992, after 41 years of service.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Port Allegany.
Fred was an avid hunter, trapper, & fisherman who shared his skills with his sons, grandsons, and nephews. He enjoyed playing cards, watching TV westerns, & walking around his community.
Surviving are five sons, Bernard L. (Dawn) Hammond of Eldred, Michael J. Hammond of Coudersport, Richard T. (Charlene) Hammond of Greensburg, PA, Thomas A. Hammond of Austin, Dean M. (Amy) Hammond of Troupsburg, NY; four daughters, Sally A. VanGorder of Port Allegany, Nancy M. (Gary) Hagg of Smethport, Laura L. Elliott, and Susan I. (Mark) Herbert both of Port Allegany; 29 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; two brothers, James L. Hammond of Port Allegany, Donald E. (Linda) Hammond of Williamsport; three sisters, Shirley J. Redmond of Burtville, Sarah M. Hammond and Joyce A. Moore both of Port Allegany; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, three brothers, Robert B., John M., and Franklin D. Hammond; and a sister, Reita Hart.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday (Jun. 26, 2021) in the United Methodist Church, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. with Rev. Allen Young, pastor of the East Smethport United Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
