Frank A. Rugh, Jr.
SMETHPORT- Frank A. Rugh, Jr., 88, of Fort Mill, SC, formerly and longtime resident of Smethport, passed away Thursday (May 5, 2011) in the Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC.
Born March 8, 1923, in Jeannette, PA, he was a son of Frank A. and Hazel Witt Rugh. On April 8, 1950, in Smethport, he married Cathleen Quirk, who died October 1986. He later married Bobbie Johnson, who also preceded him in death.
Mr. Rugh graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and attended North Carolina State University, where he was a cheerleader. He later graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science, in Mathematics.
He had been a former high school mathematics teacher for Smethport Area High School. He also had owned and operated the Rugh Ford Dealership, in Smethport, with his late wife Cathleen for many years.
He was a veteran of WWII, having served as an Ensign, in the US Navy.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Smethport, F. & A.M., McKean Lodge 388, Smethport, and Coudersport Consistory. He was a former director and board member of the Producers Bank (now Northwest Bank) of Smethport; life member of the Nittany Lions Club; longtime member of the Smethport Country Club and the golf Couples League.
Surviving are a daughter Janine (Rick) Metcalf of Fort Mill, SC; two sons, Thomas (Kay) Rugh of North Augusta, SC, James (Angie) Rugh of Hampton, VA; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert “Jake” (Betsy) Rugh of Ft. Myers, FL; two sisters, Jane Lord of Seattle, WA, and Patricia Johnston of Columbia, SC; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his two wives, Cathleen, and Bobbie, a brother, James Rugh, and a sister, Helen Wallace.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Saturday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday (May 8, 2011) with Rev. Dr. Robert George, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Smethport, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport.
Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
