Frances M. Ohman
EAST SMETHPORT- Frances M. Ohman, 88, of East Smethport, passed away Sunday (Dec. 24, 2017) in the Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1929, in Bradford, PA, she was a daughter of Joseph and Anna Missiak Zawacki. On Sept. 26, 1953, in Bradford, she married Carl E. Ohman, Jr., who died Nov. 3, 1996.
Frances was a lifetime resident of the area a graduate of Bradford High School, class of 1947.
She was employed with Bradford Supply Co. of Bradford for 12 years, doing office and IBM work. One week was spent in Erie, on training for IBM machines, where she bought a new Easter hat. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the Buick-Pontiac Garage in Smethport, for 3 years.
Mrs. Ohman was a member of the St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, where she taught 1st grade in Catechism for 33 years.
Frances enjoyed playing Scrabble and learning new words. She enjoyed making no-bake cookies for people and was very fond of animals. She wrote the lyrics for the following songs: Santa’s On His Way, Paycheck It Never is Enough, I kept the Secret of Love, My Cat Always gets Into Trouble, and I’m Drinking Too Much Beer and Whiskey. Also she came up with the melodies, but could not write music.
Since she had a passion for collecting hats, she put on hat shows for 25 years, Dubois being the farthest distance. She would say “My hat hobby went to my head”.
Every summer in either July or August, five days were spent in Ocean City, MD. She called that her rejuvenation trip and her husband called it his mercy mission. As soon as they arrived home, her husband headed to Canada to do some fishing.
She is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Eric) Johnston of Port Allegany; a granddaughter, Carli Marie Johnston of New York City, NY; and a sister, Julia Zawacki of Smethport.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, two sisters, Anna Zawacki and Helen Mack, and four borthers, Commander Joseph Zawacki, Frank, Leo and Richard Zawacki.
Friends will be received from 9-10 a.m. Friday (Dec. 29, 2017) in St..Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Smethport, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am. with Rev. Vince Cieslwicz, as celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport.
Memorials can be made to the McKean County SPCA, or St. Elizabeth’s Memorial Fund.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
