Florence I. “Flo” Shelley
PORT ALLEGANY-Florence I. “Flo” Shelley, 85, passed away Saturday (Nov. 7, 2015) in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.
Born May 25, 1930 in Bridgeport, CT, she was a daughter of Charles and Isabelle Lajeunness Hungerford. On Feb. 2, 1952, in Bridgeport, CT, she married Thorald R. Shelley, who died Sept. 24, 2001. They were married 49 years.
Mrs. Shelley was a graduate of the Bridgeport High School, and the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing, both of Bridgeport, CT.
She had worked as a registered nurse with both Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY, and Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, PA, before her retirement.
Florence was a resident of the area for 64 years, coming from Bridgeport, CT. She was a member of the St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church of Port Allegany, where she was a member of the Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Allegewi Chapter, Coudersport, PA, and Little Genesee Quilters.
Surviving are three sons, Wayne C. (Diane) Shelley of Colorado, Dr. Mark H. (Amy) Shelley of Port Allegany, Mathew A. (Kennie) Shelley of Cleveland, NC; 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rose Nacovitch of Trumbull, CT; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Thorald, three brothers, Peter, Frank, and Arthur Hungerford; and a sister, Jean Hungerford.
Friends will be received from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 11, 2015) in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Thomas E. Brown as celebrant. Burial will be in the Shelley Family cemetery, Port Allegany.
Memorials can be made to the St. Gabriel’s Church Memorial Fund.
