Dr. Noram F.C. Baker, DO
PORT ALLEGANY- Dr. Norman F.C. Baker, 81, of Hanson Hollow Rd., passed away Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2018) in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport.
Born on Nov. 24, 1937, in Pleasant Valley Township, Sartwell Creek, he was a son of Harold F. and Doris Wambold Baker. On December 19, 1964, he married Helen Jean Metcalf of Detroit, MI. They divorced in 1968.
Dr. Baker was a graduate of the Port Allegany High School, class of 1955. He earned a B.S. degree form Houghton College, Houghton, NY, in 1959. In 1963 he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy with the Doctor of Osteopathy degree. He interned at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in 1963-64 and completed a four year residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1968 at the Riverside Osteopathic Hosptial, Trenton, MI.
He practiced in Union and Clark, NJ form 1968-1976. He was on staff of the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, and the Port Allegany Community Hospital form 1976-1980 at which time he accepted a position at Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, OH as Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. During the fourteen years of tenure at Ohio University he practiced his specialty at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, OH, and Doctor’s Hospital of Nelsonville, OH. He introduced several advanced procedures of his specialty to these institutions. He delivered approximately 4000 babies during his career. For five years he served as chairman of the medical school’s Department of Specialty Medicine and sat on several committees of the medical school and hospitals. He was the recipient of many outstanding faculty awards and was recognized for his educational efforts by the Ohio House of Representatives.
Dr. Baker was certified in 1975 by the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. For outstanding service, he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1984. He served on the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for several years and was active in the Examination Committee of that Board.
In 1994 he accepted a position at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Chicago, IL, teaching and practicing there until his retirement in 1998, when he returned to the Port Allegany area.
He served as resident organist and choir director of the Sartwell Creek Union Church for many years, and substitute organist for three years for the First Presbyterian Church, Port Allegany. In 2005, he participated as a recitalist in the Organ Recital Series of the Presbyterian Church.
He was active in the Sartwell Creek Union Church serving as assistant treasurer, and financial secretary for many years. He also was active in the Sartwell Creek Cemetery Association as well as the Port Allegany Community Services, and Meals on Wheels. He was instrumental in the publication of his father’s two local historical books, A Journey in Time and A Journey in Time-Vol. 2.
He is survived by a sister, LoRena Nadene (LaVerne) Howard of Burtville, and by a niece and a nephew, three grandnephews, one grandniece, as well as several great-grandnephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son, Jonathan Daniel Baker.
At Norman’s request, there will be no viewing or funeral service. Burial will be in Card Creek Cemetery, Roulette.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
