Wellsville, NY - Dorothy Louise Ahmed of Cummings Place passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at home very peacefully surrounded by her family. She was born on March 17, 1931 to Foster and Elvira Johnston Trowbridge. She was married to Abdullah Ahmed who predeceased her on February 18, 2005.
Dorothy grew up in Allentown and Scio. She raised her children in Lake View and Lackawanna and then lived independently in Belmont and Belfast. After being suddenly afflicted with transverse myelitis and losing her ability to walk she went to the Wellsville Manor. She then happily lived with her daughter in Wellsville. Dorothy was a waitress and for many years and loved her job. She was a foster grandparent for nearly 20 years where she happily worked with special needs children at BOCES, Belmont Central School and Belfast Central School and was called "Granny" by all the children. Dorothy was a Literacy Volunteer for Allegany County and was a volunteer of the year for them and she also was a volunteer of the month for the Domestic Hotline. Dorothy was twice a cancer survivor.
Her hobbies included gardening, Yankees baseball, reading, fishing, playing cards, crocheting and bird watching. But her biggest joy was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include: 5 daughters, Anisa (Roger) Raney of Wellsville, Aminah Privetera of North Collins, and Jamelia Horaibi of Belfast, Amria (Dennis) McGillivary of Virginia and Zara (Jurgen) Brunner of Maryland; 20 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter; 3 sisters, Barbara Stocum of Rochester, Laurene Bliven of Arkport and Dianne Murray of Belfast; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by: Her parents; 3 brothers: Robert, Bruce and Donald Trowbridge; 2 sisters, Margaret Witter and Sally Keiser; several aunts, uncles and nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday, July 17, from 10 am to 11 am at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, 17 Schuyler Street in Belmont at which time a memorial service will take place. Pastor Dick Helms will preside with burial in Forest Hills Cemetery.
