Dorothy I. Hammond
PORT ALLEGANY- Dorothy I. Hammond, 86, of E. Ransom St., passed away Saturday (Mar. 27, 2021) in UPMC Cole, Coudersport.
Born January 1, 1935, in Elmira, NY, she was a daughter of Seymour M. and Minnie Spearen Trimm. On Jun. 21, 1952, in Port Allegany, she married Frederick O. Hammond, who survives. They were married 68 years.
Dorothy was a lifetime resident of the area and had worked for Helpmates of Coudersport as a home health aide, before her retirement.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Port Allegany, where she had taught Sunday school.
Dorothy enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and completing word searches. She loved spending time with her family and watching birds at her birdfeeder. Everybody loved her bake goods.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Fred, are five sons, Bernard L. (Dawn) Hammond of Rixford, Michael J. Hammond of Coudersport, Richard T. (Sharlene Eaton) Hammond of Greensburg, PA, Thomas A. Hammond of Austin, Dean M. (Amy) Hammond of Troupsburg, NY; four daughters, Sally A. (Eugene) VanGorder of Port Allegany, Nancy M. (Gary) Hagg of Smethport, Laura L. Elliott and Susan I. (Mark) Herbert both of Port Allegany; 29 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty (Harold) Miller of Morgantown, KY; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandsons Leroy and Rocky Stiles, three brothers, Walter, Carl and Frank Trim; and a sister, Ethel Williams.
Friends will be received from 12- 1 p.m. Tuesday (Mar. 30, 2021) in the United Methodist Church, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. with Rev. Matt Howe, pastor, and Rev. Allen Young, co-officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
