Dean F. Abel
PORT ALLEGANY- Dean F. Abel, 79, of Church St., passed away Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2012) in the Charles Cole Mem. Hospital, Coudersport, PA.
Born September 30, 1932, in Austin, PA, he was a son of Wallace W. and Myrtle Riley Abel. On Oct. 9, 1962, in Nashua, NH, he married Carol D. Sullivan, who survives.
He attended the Port Allegany High School.
Mr. Abel was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict, and served 21 years with the US Air Force, serving with the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron, retiring a Tech Sergent. He also worked for Ethan Allen Furniture Co. of Eldred, Bidwell Chev-Olds, of Port Allegany, and the former Adelphia Cable Co. of Coudersport, before retiring.
He attended the Chestnut Street Baptist Church of Port Allegany. He was a member of the VFW Post 6391, and American Legion Post 258, both of Port Allegany, and the Viet Nam Vets of Kersey, PA. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 460, Port Allegany, and was an avid fisherman. He loved country music and dancing. He adored and loved his grandchildren and great-grandson.
Surviving besides his wife, Carol, are a son David D. (Maria) Abel of Central Falls, RI, three daughters, Cheryl A. (Joe Becker) Ricker of Sardinia, NY, Sharon L. (Earl) Doucette of Columbus, GA, and Joy E. (Christopher) Linn of Portville, NY; 8 grandchildren, a great grandson; a sister, Phyllis E. (Don) McNeil of Turtlepoint, PA, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Amanda Ricker, and a sister, Dawn V. Smith.
Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, Saturday (Aug. 11, 2012) where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. H.D. Youngblood, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
A military service will be conducted immediately following the funeral by the Port Allegany Honor Guard.
Memorials can be made to the Veteran’s Memorial Home of Port Allegany or the Port Area Ambulance Association.
