Carol S. ENGLISH

d. March 29, 2025

Wellsville, NY

Carol Jane English, 83, of Wellsville, NY, a free spirit with a heart full of adventure and a knack for making life a little more magical, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted mother, a cherished friend, and an eternal explorer and optimist.

Born on November 3, 1941, in Wellsville, Carol remained deeply rooted in her hometown, though her curiosity carried her far and wide. She took great pride and interest in her lineage, tracing her mother Ethel’s ancestry back to 16th-century England and her father Ervin’s to 17th-century Germany. A proud graduate of Wellsville High School, she continued her education at SUNY Fredonia, where she embarked on her first great overseas adventure during a semester abroad – an experience that ignited a lifelong passion for travel. She embraced every journey with an open heart, collecting stories, friendships, and unforgettable memories along the way.

Carol’s love for discovery wasn’t limited to far-off places; she was also a passionate educator. For nearly 40 years, she taught middle school in the Wellsville Public School District, where she inspired generations of students with her wisdom, humor, and boundless encouragement.

Music was another of Carol’s great loves. An enthusiastic violinist and pianist form a young age, she later became the longtime organist at First Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was also a devoted and lifelong member. Her commitment to her faith and community led her to serve in leadership roles, including church president. In retirement, she helped establish a daycare at the church, working tirelessly to build a warm and nurturing program for local families.

Carol’s zest for life was as contagious as her laughter. Well into her 80s, she could be spotted riding her bicycle, or tending to her garden, or tackling a home project with the energy of someone half her age. She had a way of making everyday moments special, often writing original poems that infused celebrations with humor, heart, and her signature wit.

Above all, Carol treasured the people in her life. She nurtured deep, lasting friendships and delighted in staying connected, whether through letters, phone calls, or spontaneous visits. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, adventure, and whimsy – a reminder that life is best lived with curiosity, courage, and a touch of mischief.

Carol is survived by her loving sons, Richard and David; nephew Tom; nephews Philip, Joey, Anthony, and nieces Lisa and Tina. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel; her dear sister Nancy; and her brother-in-law, Dennis Miller.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 4 – 7 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 470 North Main Street, Wellsville, NY, 14895. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 11 AM in the church. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.
